Helena enjoys creating work of beauty to the eye, and to the touch, making functional ceramics that are a joy to use. Hand-thrown porcelain with additional fluting, cutting, tapping, and assembly techniques, are glazed uniquely with local oxides and oriental glazes. ‘CLAY FIRE TIME‘ is a recent Documentary filmed and produced by her sons Fergal & Luke at Helena’s studio in its silvan setting in Wicklow.
Helena, with her husband Peter Brennan (1916-1995), set up the first Irish high-firing Stoneware and Porcelain studio at Dun Laoghaire in the mid sixties, supplying restaurants, pubs and commissions; they also exported worldwide gaining many accolades. Founder member of the Crafts Council, Ceramics Ireland and the Society of Designers, Helena moved to set up her new studio near Avoca in 2004, where she makes for exhibitions and commissions. In 2014 Helena was honored for her pioneering work for Irish Pottery by the International Academy of Ceramics.
