Shabbie stall at the Dublin Flea Christmas MarketOriginally from London, Jane and Heather, friends of 30 years now live and work in Belfast. Five years ago they found themselves with empty nests, the kids having flown and in need of a new challenge.

With a shared love of interiors and all things vintage, quirky and eclectic they stumbled across traditional vintage hand made quilts from India. Made from fabulous combinations of soft vintage Indian cotton, they were unlike anything they had ever seen before and it was love at first sight. Jane and Heather decided to pool their resources, move into Jane’s big old empty house in Belfast and Shabbie was born.

Reinvention is the name of the game not just for Jane and Heather but also for their products. Vintage quilts arrive from India often looking a little tired and the worse for wear. At Shabbie they are washed, tidied, patched where necessary and those that are beyond repair are made into beautiful mini throws, cushions and bolsters. For Shabbie it’s all about seeing the potential and unique beauty in something that has perhaps seen better days and giving it a new lease of life.

Shabbie has its permanent home in the award winning St. George’s Market in Belfast where they trade every Saturday and Sunday, except for the last Sunday of each month when they trade at the Dublin Flea Market. They also sell online and in The Designerie in Bushmills, Co Antrim.

At this year’s Christmas Flea you will find Jane and Heather on hand to talk you through finding that unique and beautiful Christmas gift for someone special. They will have everything from huge Kingsize Bedspreads, to vintage throws, handmade cushions, Fair Trade ‘Goodweave’ rugs and of course the all important stocking fillers in the form of colourful socks imported from around the globe.
